Is it against the law to stick yourself on roads or block runways? Yes, they are. But "shits on basic rights, destroys art like the Taliban", who graffiti the Berlin artwork "Grundgesetz 49"? That is more the question. Samira Akbarian makes it clear in the introduction to her book Recht brechen (Breaking the Law) with this quote from the frothing SPD politician Michael Roth what actions like those of the "Last Generation" mean - and what the public discourse about them is all about: civil disobedience. It is indeed illegal and can be annoying. But anyone who chooses this form of protest in order to be noticed in the first place is still claiming to be acting legitimately. This is because the justified concerns of the "disobedient" can reform existing law, for example the right to an intact environment for future generations. That's right, says salon host Jens Meyer-Kovać.
