Eyes look at us from pictures, we look back. What are the gazes in the drawings, paintings, photographs and films looking for? Is it an undefined longing that drives them, or are we, the viewers, the ones being looked at?
Seeing and being seen are mutually dependent. When we see something, we are looked at and touched. Gazes play a key role when it comes to creating and questioning emotions, power relations and social constructions. In a world that is largely focused on the sense of sight, as well as in artistic practice, seeing is naturally at the forefront. Because things are organized and fixed in the gaze. Something shows itself and withdraws at the same time, so that what is seen and visible also creates a trace of the absent and invisible.
The exhibition with works from both the Lambrecht-Schadeberg and contemporary art collections invites visitors to explore seeing and the gaze itself - in all its facets and across all media.
