Born in Mongolia, classically trained pianist and composer Shuteen Erdenebaatar came to Munich in 2018 to complete her master's degree in jazz piano and jazz composition. At just 25 years old, Shuteen Erdenebaatar has won numerous prestigious awards, including the biggest award for jazz in Germany, the German Jazz Award 2024, the most important Mongolian cultural award "Mungun Mod" 2024, 1st place and the Audience Award of the Young Munich Jazz Award 2022, 1st place of the Kurt Maas Jazz Award or the Composition Award at the Biberacher Jazz Award. She is currently working on her three world-class ensembles: a cross-genre 20-piece chamber jazz orchestra, her exquisite piano and contralto clarinet duo "Lightville" and the hard-swinging, highly sensitive young jazz quartet that can be heard this evening. In 2023, she has signed a three-album contract with the multi-Grammy award-winning New York label Motema Music, which includes all three of her current projects.
On her debut album "Rising Sun" (Motéma Music, 2023), Shuteen Erdenebaatar combines her classical piano and composition skills with the boundless freedom of jazz. Her classical foundation is unmistakable throughout, which is evident in her technical brilliance, stylistic finesse and the thematic structure of her compositions. Enriched with expressive harmonies and rhythmic variability, Erdenebaatar's memorable melodies serve as a framework within which her formidable band can expand.
