SMALLTOWN BOY

Multi-generational theater project P13

Jude (pronunciation:ʤuːd) is 15, gay, has a best friend, lives in a small town and has a crush on his classmate Luke. But Jude wants to get away from this small town. Away from the people who make him feel "that he doesn't belong here" and whose insults and attacks he is subjected to on a daily basis, he dreams of becoming a movie star and going to Hollywood. It's like a call he has to answer. He only tells his best friend Angela about it:

"Aren't you scared?"
"No. I'm afraid to stay. It's my dream, Angela."

So Jude buys a bus ticket and goes to the school prom one last time the night before he leaves to say goodbye to Luke.

The story is based on true events. However, all the names in the play are fictitious. In 2008, Lawrence King was shot dead by a classmate in Oxnard in southern California because he could not cope with the fact that Lawrence King was so open about his sexual orientation.
