Trans woman Ren is in her mid-20s, a budding writer and has just lost her job. Now, of all times, she is about to go on a beach vacation with her loving but rather temperamental Italian-Canadian parents and her rebellious little sister Siena. Knowing that she will now have to rely more on the support of her family again, Ren waits for the right moment to tell them about her dismissal. But between the confines of the stuffy vacation resort, the usual family squabbles and an irritating vacation flirtation, it's not so easy to find space for herself and her own feelings.

Against the backdrop of the sultry boredom of a family vacation, writer and director Luis De Filippis tells the story of a millennial's contradictory desire to be independent and cared for at the same time in her debut film. Far removed from melodramatic clichés, "Something You Said Last Night" paints a multi-layered portrait of a character that breaks with several narratives of the representation of trans people in cinema. Ren is loved by her family for her idiosyncrasies and perceived as a daughter and sister - but the question of what exactly she wants to do with her life is of course not yet resolved. The young Canadian trans actress Carmen Madonia makes a brilliant acting debut.
