Founded in 1999 by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra has long since developed into one of the most internationally renowned orchestras. The guiding principle from the very beginning has been to bring together musicians from Israel, Palestine and many other countries in the Middle East and North Africa in order to enable the discourse of equal voices from the different cultures of the Middle East through the experience of making music together - what message could be more relevant today? To mark its 25th birthday, the orchestra and its founder are now coming to Bremen for the first time. The soloist is star violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, who has already been made an honorary member of the orchestra. With its enormous technical demands, Brahms' only violin concerto is one of the most important Romantic concertos. Arnold Schoenberg's symphonic poem "Pelleas and Melisande", composed in 1903 before he turned to twelve-tone music in his late Romantic phase, even surpassed its role models Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner with its spectacular, expansive expressive power! Two masterpieces which, in the hands of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, are perfect for sending out a statement for humanism and equality!
