USA 2020, documentary film, 115 min, FSK 6
Director: Matt Wolf
Language: OmU (English with German subtitles)
"The future begins now!" In 1991, eight people moved into a huge dome in the desert, completely sealed off from the outside world. In the "Biosphere 2" experiment, a self-contained, self-sustaining ecosystem, the aim was to recreate the Earth on a small scale and ensure the survival of humanity even on alien planets. A project that was as visionary as it was megalomaniacal and soon reached unexpected limits.
With historical footage and new interviews with the participants at the time, the two-year experiment is reconstructed in all its enormity. The focus is on the participants who, between awareness of the climate crisis, do-it-yourself, sectarianism, happenings and science, tried to understand the relationship between humans and the earth and to save it for the future.
The writer T.C. Boyle used this incredibly twisty story as the basis for his novel "The Terranauts".
