In the film, a former McDonald's restaurant in Herne alternates between documentary and staged scenes to symbolize the structural change in the Ruhr region. At the same time, the history of the store exemplifies the idea of the Americanization of post-war West German society. The film traces the development of the location - the stories of the protagonists are interwoven with overarching themes that continue to have a strong impact on the region: from the changing concept of work to the future of inner cities and the importance of culture for the region. Private memories and collective memory thus merge in the film.

A cinematic soil sample on an industrial wasteland in the "Frohe Zukunft" district in Halle a. d. Saale: During the Nazi era, the "Siebelwerke", an aircraft factory where forced laborers were forced to produce wings, stood here. In their search for traces of the past, the two filmmakers meet two men who lead a stubborn life there and have become friends through their passion for collecting: One keeps old and discarded items, the other reads them aloud. The digging for history mixes with the two men's personal stories and associative impressions of the place. A life on an island believed to be deserted, which can be both abysmal and paradisiacal at the same time.
