Emperor Tiberius, stricken by illness, is looking for a successor, so he brings his adopted grandson Caligula into his palace. Striving for power and influence, Caligula senses the opportunity of a lifetime. He kills Tiberius, seizes the imperial signet ring and has himself declared the new emperor. Surrounded by loyal companions such as his sister and lover Drusilla and his wife Caesonia, he leads a harsh reign. Caligula does not shy away from plundering Rome's resources for his personal gimmicks. Despite all the current rules, decadence and debauchery now reign at the imperial court at his behest. In doing so, he risks the reputation and future of Rome. When Caligula, increasingly addicted to madness, proclaims himself a god, resistance to the tyrant finally begins to form.
