The advertising copywriter Jakob Fabian experiences Berlin in the 1930s as a turbulent time, permeated by changes that, as it were, do not affect him. When he roams the neighbourhood at night with his restless friend Labude, he is not really part of the action; even the political radicalization of his friend leaves him cold. But he begins to burn for the self-confident and independent Cornelia and when their relationship fails and he also loses his job, Fabian's life goes inexorably downhill ...
