Inspired by Anatol Regnier's book of the same name, filmmaker Dominik Graf's JEDER SCHREIBT FÜR SICH ALLEIN is an attempt to get closer to some of the writers who remained in Germany between 1933 and 1945.
Followed by a film discussion with Dominik Graf, Felix von Boehm, Constantin Lieb and Anatol Regnier.
Was it possible to be a good, even outstanding writer and still come to terms with the National Socialist regime? Together with Anatol Regnier, author of the book of the same name, Dominik Graf approaches the writers who remained in Germany between 1933 and 1945 - Gottfried Benn, Erich Kästner, Hans Fallada, Jochen Klepper, Ina Seidel and Will Vesper - and explores the question of what attitude they developed towards National Socialism in their writing, thinking and feelings. How does this behavior contrast and conflict with well-known exile authors such as the Manns, and how can the contradictions lived back then be reconciled with the worldwide fame of these authors today? A cinematic essay on the complex relationship between art and political action.
