A marriage in ten sessions by Nick Hornby
Louise: busy doctor. Tom: unemployed music critic. Two children together. Relationship status: broken, dented, in need of therapy. Yes, she cheated on him, but is it an affair or just a misstep with three repetitions? And is cheating the disease or just a symptom of a much more complex and long-simmering condition?
Nick Hornby (e.g. "High Fidelity", "About a boy", "A long way down") portrays this likeable couple in full crisis in an illusionless, stunningly funny and very British way. He calls his work "A marriage in ten sessions", but chooses an unusual angle. We don't lie on the couch with the couple, but experience them in the ten minutes of "pre-glow" in the pub before the actual therapy session. This is where the really nasty questions are put on the table - after all, you know each other's quirks better than your own by now. Nevertheless, there is still a spark of love underneath the fast-paced verbal battles - but will it be enough?
