Every shot is a hit - the promise of many a fairground stall becomes reality for the young writer Wilhelm. And not a second too soon: after all, he has to prove himself an accurate huntsman in order to marry his beloved Käthchen, the daughter of the hereditary forester. In truth, however, Wilhelm is a lousy shot. It is only thanks to the magic bullets offered to him by the shady Stelzfuß that the desperate wooer has any hope of mastering the final test shot on the wedding day. For this, the condition that one of the miracle balls will not obey him, but Stelzfuß, seems a comparatively small price to pay...

Carl Maria von Weber first set this popular story to music in 1821 in his opera "Der Freischütz", which is still widely performed today. In 1990, the gifted musician Tom Waits, beat poet William Burroughs and director Robert Wilson took on this devil's pact narrative with "The Black Rider" - and created an unusual musical full of morbid magic, which is also about sheer humanity and deep primal fears. Tonne is now staging the cult production with its bizarre characters and extraordinary music on the Reutlingen theater stage.
