The holidays are just around the corner, but at the elite boarding school Barton Academy, the unpopular Professor Paul Hunham has been obliged to supervise all those who are unable to visit their families. This doesn't suit him any more than it does the rebellious pupil Angus. The frustration grows even greater when Angus, Paul and the cook Mary are the only ones left in the school building. But as time goes on, the shared loneliness and numerous bizarre incidents lead to the unequal trio finding something of a contemplative mood despite everything.

With his typical subtle humor and a lot of sensitivity for outsiders, Alexander Payne tells a story for all those who like the holidays and also for those who could actually do without them. The empathetic performance of the three great actors (Oscar for Da'Vine Joy Randolph) and the atmospheric setting make it a pleasure to spend time with them, despite or perhaps because of their all-too-human shortcomings.
