USA 2016, Director: Anna Biller, 121 minutes, 35mm, OV
According to Anna Biller, THE LOVE WITCH is the story of a "femme fatale from a female point of view" that delves into a magical and dark world of desire and sexuality, in which the elegant witch Elaine searches for true love in a timeless setting. This leads to tragic consequences as her obsession with romance and supernatural powers produce unpredictable results. Shot on 35 mm and developed in Technicolor, the nostalgic style is reminiscent of 60s horror. Opulent color schemes and Morricone-inspired music create a retro aesthetic that combines CAMP, goth and dark humor.
Biller sheds light on Hollywood's image of women between exploitation films and everyday pornography and at the same time formulates a satirical homage to the witch film genre. In order to create nostalgic glamour and an atmosphere imbued with magic, the color theme of THE LOVE WITCH is based on purple and lavender tones, which run through the make-up and costumes and are omnipresent in the scenography. Purple, often associated with spirituality and mysticism, also symbolizes passion and seduction together with shades of red and pink, combining two central aspects of the heroine.
