Giovanni announces to his wife Antonia his ambition to make their relationship more open. In other words: open for him, with changing sexual partners and so on.
His wife doesn't find this amusing and first seeks death very often, but then, as a better alternative, finds herself a lover. Giovanni didn't want that either ...
So a farce becomes a tragicomedy, because only true misery is really funny.
