ALTER ZORN

Turbostaat have never peacefully embraced their listeners on a musical level since their inception. There was always more understatement and North Frisian sobriety than charm offensive or cheerfulness. Turbostaat music is punk rock with Wadden Sea fog hanging in its lungs - ever since the band formed in the Schleswig-Holstein province in 1999 and a quarter of a century later. Only recently - in the late fall of 2024 - Marten Ebsen, Jan Windmeier, Rollo Santos, Tobert Knopp and Peter Carstens celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of their band project, which has become a life partnership.
Where there used to be seagulls, Wadden Sea fog and gray expanses, now flocks of pigeons and end-time smoggy concrete castles obscure the view of everything beautiful. Turbostaat look out over neglected corner pubs piled high with gloomy shadows, over metropolises that are becoming increasingly cramped - and only rarely do they stare out to sea.
There is too much "old anger" raging in Turbostaat's woodwork as a result of hard years marked by illness, concert failures and overall shit. There was simply no room for recapitulations, grown-man punk or a polished 'everything used to be better' album. "Alter Zorn" was once again overseen by Moses Schneider on the production side and feels like a cleansing thunderstorm in twelve acts. "Alter Zorn" is challenging - not least because it seems to be largely set in the challenging present and hints at a bleak dystopia that looks dramatically similar to reality. As is probably well known by now, Turbostaat are not hymn writers, sloganeers or plain-speakers - but masters of poetic obfuscation, of confused chains of association and metaphors, of confused intellectuality and fairytale-like gloom. Turbostaat's new album "Alter Zorn" will be released on January 17, 2025.
