TOWER OF HAMBURG

Talk and painting partners: Heike Sudmann (DIE LINKE), VIVA LA BERNIE, Mikropol, "Wilder Wald bleibt!", Dorothea Heintze, Sophia Leipelt, Bernd Knies, Frank Engelbrecht and many more.

This special art project opens the stage to anyone and everyone - regardless of language, origin, age, occupation or artistic ability. Equipped with brushes and paints, everyone is invited to become part of this creative process. Together, the participants will recreate the famous work of art, which symbolically addresses the human pursuit of greatness and its often questionable consequences. With the help of cherry pickers, the painters will be transported to the canvas to create the impressive 7 x 9 meter surface.

A central element of the event is the auction of sections of the painting on Sunday, July 21 at 4 p.m. Once the painting has been completed, these sections will be cut out of the finished canvas, framed and auctioned off individually. Each of these small unique pieces tells its own story, poetically linked to Hamburg's present and the creation of the Elbtower. For example, Bruegel's shaded village is linked to a shading report that was drawn up for the Rothenburgsort area in connection with the construction of the Elbtower.

Live music

While the lift is going up and down, while the painting TURMBAU ZU BABEL is being diligently painted above and below, you will hear sounds and voices from the era in which Pieter Bruegel's painting was painted. Whether bassoon, flute, cello, countertenor or bass-baritone, Bach or Scarlatti, live baroque music will be in the air on both days of the event.

On Saturday evening from around 18:30, the music will be transformed into a contemporary DJ set with eclectic pop, rock, funk and jazz from the last three decades of the last century.

Live performance

A letter will be read aloud by 12 people and in 12 different languages, written by a woman who worked as a translator at the Tower of Babel. Her letter is addressed to her family, who are far, far away at home. In her letter, she describes her feelings of longing and missing, as well as the circumstances of building the tower as she experiences them. The letter is translated into German by a translator.

Children and youth program

In a pagoda next to the Bruegel tower painting, completely different towers are built and painted with different materials. With cardboard rolls, found wood. Stories are read in which towers play leading roles: Rapunzel, When Mr. Babel built a tower. Short interpretations of Bruegel's painting are attempted while naive designs are painted that further develop the disused Elbe Tower, bird hotel, adventure playground, nature park.
