CAN 2024, Feature film, 89 min, FSK 6
Director: Matthew Rankin
with: Rojina Esmaeili, Danielle Fichaud, Sobhan Javadi, Pirouz Nemati
Language: OmU (Farsi, French with German subtitles)
In a mysterious and surreal intermediate zone somewhere between Tehran and Winnipeg, where everyone speaks Farsi: Elementary school students Negin and Nazgol find a sum of money frozen in the winter ice. Meanwhile, Massoud guides a group of increasingly confused tourists through Winnipeg's historic sites. And Matthew quits his meaningless job with the Quebec government and embarks on a journey to visit his mother.
Filmfest Köln writes: "The best Iranian film ever made by a Canadian. Matthew Rankin transforms his hometown of Winnipeg into a mixture of French Canadian snow desert and Tehran circa 1985 for his loving homage to filmmakers such as Abbas Kiarostami and Jafar Panahi. What sounds like a staircase joke for film nerds has become a heart-rending comedy full of poetry and surreal humor. It deservedly won the Audience Award in Cannes this year." We can't put this wonderful film experience into words any better.
