GDR 1989, documentary film, 88 min
Director: Roland Steiner
Language: OmeU (German with English subtitles)
Youth subcultures were a taboo subject in the GDR. It was only at the end of the 1980s that Roland Steiner succeeded in gaining an unbiased insight into alternative youth scenes. Goths and punks talk to the camera about their need to be different, but skinheads and neo-Nazis also make an appearance. The escalating violence of the early 90s casts its shadow. Stefan Heym, Christa Wolf and other intellectuals seek a dialog with the young people in the film, but the impulse came too late. OUR CHILDREN premiered on November 1, 1989 at the Leipzig Documentary Film Week, a few days after the Wall came down.
With an introduction by film historian Dr. Andreas Kötzing (Hannah Arendt Institute, Dresden).
