From December 7 to 22, 2024, the "Underwater Cinema" by artist-scientist Geraint Rhys Whittaker will open its doors in Oldenburg's city center. For the project, Whittaker has brought together eight international video artists with eight researchers from the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity and the University of Oldenburg (HIFMB). The resulting short films provide an artistic insight into marine biodiversity research and show the spectrum of the still young research institute: from algae and seagrass to the spread of invasive species and the mathematics behind food webs to research into political processes and legislative procedures relating to small-scale fishing in Colombia.
