"Hello, identity check" - for many members of marginalized groups, this police greeting is part of everyday life. Roman Thurn analyses checks that are carried out regardless of the occasion against the background of practice-theoretical and ethnomethodological considerations as interaction rituals that amount to a stigmatization of those affected. He reconstructs the genesis of police suspicion as a process of in/congruence, in which not only racial profiling plays a key role. This shows that the social identity of those affected is damaged in the course of control in the sense of Erving Goffman.
