There is a place where you can no longer reach with the epilator, where the sausage sandwich fell behind the stove the other day, a deserted spot in the South Seas, where everyone is human in a very unmistakable way, naked and full of insatiable needs. No Google or travel cancellation insurance can help, it grabs you and won't let you go. Then you can pretend nothing is wrong or you can distract yourself, develop a food intolerance, burp in the hallway every morning or ride a recumbent bike to Bottrop. There are so many ways to be unhappy: two-ply toilet paper, barefoot shoes, marriage. But at some point between descaling the aerator and looking for a customer number, you might have a moment like this. And suddenly this place feels warm and cozy. Then you look around and realize: Wait a minute, there's hope at the end of the tunnel, there's still a light on. Or has someone just left the fridge open?
