On the surface, things seem to be going well for the Krause family: the business has successfully passed into the hands of son-in-law Thomas and Martha, one of the two daughters, is expecting their first child. But when Thomas' old university friend Alfred comes to visit, the family members' hidden conflicts, disappointments and longings are revealed. And the friends realize that they have drifted far apart politically and personally. Alfred confronts Thomas with formerly shared ideals and asks: Why do the rifts between the political positions seem so insurmountable? In his adaptation of Gerhart Hauptmann's famous drama, which caused a sensation when it was published in 1889, Austrian playwright Ewald Palmetshofer portrays both a family and a society of isolated people who cannot find their way to each other.
