"I only know my country by smell. It smells like my mother's food. My father says you remember the smell of your country everywhere, but you only recognize it when you're far away."

"Warum das Kind in der Polenta kocht" is the story of a young girl who grows up between two worlds: the colorful, glorified home of circuses and caravans and the harsh reality of constantly being a stranger and on the move.

An actress and a young girl take to the stage at JES to tell the story of Aglaja Veteranyi. Together with director Yeşim Schaub, they search for the multi-layered, sometimes contradictorily ramified feeling of being a stranger in the opposing perspectives of the characters, which is also repeatedly broken by precisely drawn images, and deal with it impressively.

How is it possible to share the experience of homelessness despite different histories, ages and backgrounds? Especially in times of current wars and refugee movements, Aglaja's search for a place where she can arrive overlaps inextricably with the reality that surrounds us.
