In cooperation with the Georgian Consulate General in Frankfurt am Main and the Verein deutsch-georgische Kulturbegegnung in Köln e.V., the Georgian theater ensemble presents
"West Flight" based on the novel of the same name by Dato Turashvili
On November 18, 1983, a group of young people failed in their attempt to divert an Aeroflot plane from Tbilisi to Leningrad in Turkey.
The attempt ended violently.
To this day, there is a debate in Georgia about who is responsible for the many people who died when the plane was stormed:
The hijackers, who were classified as terrorists by the Soviet court, or the KGB unit that intervened with all severity. The death penalty for the unsuccessful freedom seekers and for the completely innocent confessor who was stigmatized as the ringleader (with the exception of one participant, the 'pregnant girl') caused an eternal trauma in Georgian society.
For decades there was silence about this central event, although the sad fate of the kidnappers was known to all Georgians. Only
David Turashvili, one of Georgia's most important writers, brought the story back to light.
The play will be performed in Georgian with subtitles (German).
