Who Cares?

In the organizer's words:

Germany is a welfare state whose citizens form a community of solidarity that cares for each other and takes responsibility. But what are care and welfare actually worth to us? - "Emergency" is the word of the moment that best describes the precarious situation in most care professions today. Too few staff in care facilities, hospitals and daycare centers, excessive workloads and poor working conditions for people who look after others. And even those who privately care for the sick, elderly or children quickly feel abandoned by society. This is because high physical, emotional and financial burdens expose those affected to the direct effects of this described "emergency" - often women, many of them with only a low income or a migrant background. This situation ultimately raises the question for everyone involved in our community of solidarity: "Who Cares?"

Together with composer Marc L. Vogler, the new Composer in Residence at the Junge Oper Dortmund, and director Mirjam Schmuck, who has already explored the links between raising children, caring and the world of work in previous projects, the ensemble of the Dortmund Citizens' Opera explores the question of how we as a community of solidarity want to treat each other and be there for each other. Inspired and guided by experiences from their own personal lives, the performers transform this thematic exploration into stories and music on the big opera stage.

Until September 2024, there is still the opportunity to join the project - singing, playing or making music - and become part of this special musical community!
