"Wir färbten jeden Buchstaben" - Rose Ausländer in Bild und Schrift

In the organizer's words:

"We colored every letter" - Rose Ausländer in image and writing

From July 3 to September 15, 2024, the University and State Library (ULB) invites you to a special exhibition that sheds light on the work of the poet Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) and explores its connection with the visual arts. In addition to Ausländer's poetic exploration of painting, colors and visual forms, the exhibition also addresses other central lyrical motifs such as home and abroad, survival and travel, hope and farewell.

A curated selection of artists' books will be presented in which the artists Otto Piene, HAP Grieshaber, John Gerard, Otto Rohse, Theresia Schüllner, Petra Maria Lorenz and Kasia Lewandowska interpret Ausländer's poems. By combining image and writing, the artists' books react to a constellation that is already inherent in Ausländer's poems. Manuscripts, typescripts and letters from the estate complement the exhibited artist's books and offer insights into Ausländer's writing techniques and correspondence.

The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between students at the Departments of German Studies and Art History in the summer semester 2024. In cooperation with the ULB, the Heinrich Heine Institute, the Rose Ausländer Society and the Citizens' University, the exhibition offers the opportunity to explore the diverse connections and reciprocal references between words and images in and with Ausländer's work.

The vernissage will take place on July 3, 2024 at 6 pm.

We look forward to your visit!
