Workshop: Biomaterials from algae

This workshop provides an introduction to the production of materials from algae-based biopolymers and natural dyeing with microalgae and other natural dyes. The workshop will begin with an introduction to the work of biodesigner Bea Brücker and the applications of biomaterials in the fashion and textile industry.

Bea Brücker is...
...multidisciplinary biodesigner and artist. After completing her Masters degree at the Royal College of Art in London, she taught the organic platform on the MA Fashion course. She regularly works on interdisciplinary projects with theater and film productions, art installations and research institutions. Using algae, she produces compostable bio-materials for costumes and sculptures that show alternative post-capitalist futures through installation and performance. Since 2024 she has been co-founder of SYLIA, a start-up that produces biomaterials from mycelium. Her award-winning work has been recognized internationally through exhibitions at Bucerius Kunst Forum Hamburg (2024), DWIH's Future Forum in New York (2022) and Berlin Fashion Week (2019) and will soon be on display at Grassi Museum (Leipzig, 2024) and Gardens by the Bay in Singapore (2025).
