A new interpretation of the timeless fragment by Georg Büchner. In a revised and new version, Woyzeck finds its way back onto the stage of Theater Essen-Süd.

The simple soldier Franz Woyzeck lives a life of the least. He is constantly surrounded by the shadows and ideals of his society. Driven by the fear of death and the constant struggle for his existence, he is pushed into menial tasks; whether it's shaving his captain every day or being the doctor's guinea pig - Woyzeck is driven, driven, driven.

Woyzeck is driven, rushed, psychologically and physically maltreated. He can no longer do justice to his girlfriend Marie and their child. Marie, on the other hand, gives in to her desires and falls for the lascivious drum major. Her infidelity to Woyzeck has consequences...

Just as Georg Büchner's incomplete drama is only a fragment, this production resembles a chaotic and yet carefully assembled puzzle: the minimalist lighting and the audiovisual soundtrack, reminiscent of a skipping record, form the dance floor for performative elements and the space for a fascinating play of masks that literally drags the audience through the rifts of our society. At the same time, this modern production also reflects a trip through Woyzeck's psyche, in which he threatens to lose himself again and again.
