Everything speaks against the sales representative Leonard Vole. He is accused of murdering the widow Emily French. His motive seems clear: the elderly lady had left him her entire fortune. Defense lawyer Sir Wilfried Robarts takes on the case and does not do badly. He manages to cast doubt on the testimony of the first two witnesses through skillful questioning. But the third and final witness surprises everyone present: It is Romaine Heilger - the defendant's wife. She refutes his alleged alibi.
