The Bremen chamber choir Northern Spirit invites you to its first concert under the direction of Rucsandra Popescu at the Center for the Arts. The young singers present a repertoire that combines the choir's roots in Australian choral music by Gordon Hamilton, Stephen Leek and Jaret Choolun with international contemporary composers (Jake Runestad, Morten Lauridsen, Hugo Alfvén, Lisa Young).

A journey through the modern vocal music of the 21st century, with sound colors from America, Europe and Australia. Pieces such as "Land des Norden" (Lydia Linke and Gordon Hamilton) tell of the beauty of the Wümme meadows in the Bremen region. In "Bolle reistest zu Pfingsten" (Jaret Choolun), the choir takes its listeners to Pankow, while "Celtic Dance" (Kirby Shaw) showcases the typical sounds of Irish vocal music. These are just a few examples of the wonderful and diverse sound world of modern choral music of the 21st century from the Bremen choir's current program.

About the choir:

The Northern Spirit chamber choir was founded in Bremen in 2006 by the Australian composer and conductor Gordon Hamilton. Since then, the young singers have dedicated themselves to an international and ambitious repertoire in which Australian choral music and new arrangements of Australian and German folk songs form an important focus. Both under Hamilton (2006-2012) and under the subsequent direction of another Australian composer, Jaret Choolun (2012-2023), Northern Spirit successfully took part in international competitions and completed national and international concert tours. Also under the direction of Rucsandra Popescu, the choir is dedicated to challenging international choral music from the 20th and 21st centuries and will present the first results of this new and exciting collaboration in summer 2024.

About the conductor:

Rucsandra Popescu comes from a family of musicians in Bucharest and has lived in Germany since 2002. She completed her concert exam in composition at the University of the Arts Bremen in 2012. She works as a composer, choir director and pianist. She was a lecturer in the jazz choir at the University of Music and Theater in Leipzig. Since 2017 she has been a lecturer for the pop choir and since 2020 for the large university choir and in choral conducting at the University of the Arts Bremen.
