Members of the Chamber of Employees are - according to the law on the Chamber of Employees in the state of Bremen - all employees in the state of Bremen (with the exception of civil servants). This currently includes over 400,000 employees subject to social security contributions and mini-jobbers. Unemployed people who last worked in the state of Bremen are also members of the Chamber of Employees.
As a public corporation, the Chamber represents the interests of its members. The Chamber of Employees emerged from the originally independent chambers for blue-collar and white-collar workers founded in 1921. These merged in 2001 to form the new Bremen Chamber of Employees.
The legal basis is the law on the Chamber of Employees in the state of Bremen, the structure and focus is set out in the statutes and the self-financing of the chamber by its members is regulated by the contribution regulations.
All employees and trainees employed in the state of Bremen are members of the Chamber of Employees. The contributions - 0.14 percent of the gross monthly wage from a minimum salary of more than 538 euros - are withheld by the employer and transferred to the tax office. (Status: 01.01.2023)
