The Cuvilliéstheater (Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel) is a venue of the Residenztheater. However, it is also used as a museum and for numerous other events; its use is in the hands of the Bavarian Palace and Lake Administration.

Elector Max III Joseph had the theater built from 1751 to 1755 according to plans by François Cuvilliés the Elder. It hosted numerous magnificent productions of baroque operas, including the world premiere of Mozart's "Idomeneo" in 1781. The building was destroyed during the Second World War. However, the previously removed box paneling was preserved and was reinstalled elsewhere, in the so-called Apothekenstock at Brunnenhof, until 1958. As a result, this work of art of European standing, a pearl of courtly rococo, can be experienced again today.
