In addition to the fact that Cologne Cathedral is world-famous and opens its doors daily to sheer numbers of visitors, the city's landmark also has a largely unknown side: deep beneath the feet of marvelers, archaeological excavations have been taking place since 1946. These not only lead to the beginnings of Cologne's city history, but over the decades have developed into the largest church excavations in the country. The underground spaces now cover some 4,000 square meters and reveal the internal structures of numerous ancient buildings as well as a living history of the city.

The cathedral excavation closes at 0:00, with last admission at 23:30. Depending on the crowds, there may be waiting times. Please note that no bags or backpacks are allowed.
