Friedhof Buntentor

The Buntentor cemetery is the oldest municipal cemetery in Bremen. It was first established in 1822 as a private cemetery. It was then taken over by the municipality in 1941.

Spacious lawns and very old trees make this small cemetery in the densely built-up Neustadt an important inner-city open space. The buildings in a simple, neoclassical style emphasize the functional dignity of the site. The current mourning hall was built in 1950 to replace a chapel built in 1871, which burnt down in 1942.

Due to the soil conditions, only urn burials are possible at the Buntentor cemetery. However, there is a very attractive brick wall for urn niches next to the traditional burial plots.
In exceptional cases, coffin burials are carried out in brick tombs.

A group of more than 20 Sinti and Roma graves and the remains of an equally large group of Islamic graves can be seen as a special feature. A memorial stone was laid in this cemetery for the victims of the gas explosion on Geschworenenweg in November 2000.
