Studio Trafique

Studio Trafique is a theater in Cologne Nippes that focuses on contemporary aesthetics. The focus is on developing new forms of theater by combining familiar theatrical aesthetics with film and digital technologies.

In 2022, they were awarded the Cologne Culture Prize for Young Initiatives.
In 2023, three of their productions are nominated for the Cologne Theater Awards.

The studio is run by the independent artists' collective Trafique - a professional, independent collective that has been developing one to three performances a year since 2012. The core ensemble consists of around ten artists from the fields of directing, sound and video art, as well as programming, stage design, dramaturgy, acting and text. Anna Marienfeld and Björn Gabriel are the artistic directors.

Aesthetically, Trafique is concerned with the fundamental development of new narrative structures. Over the past eleven years, they have created a varied program of diverse productions and have continuously developed further - always in search of appropriate manifestations for their contemporary content. In doing so, they overcome superficial genre boundaries.

Using digital and cinematic elements, they expand the conventional spaces of presentation and impact of the performative arts. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Trafique has developed the pioneering format of hybrid live-film theater, in which the live character of the production is always in the foreground: with live direction, live video editing and live sound engineering, all means always refer to the theatrical occasion and thus create ever new experiences for the audience.
