"The Valentin-Karlstadt-Musäum is a municipal museum in Munich dedicated to the comedian Karl Valentin and his partner Liesl Karlstadt.
Opened on September 17, 1959 as the Valentin-Musäum in the Isartor, a four-kilo brick was sent as an invitation. The painter Hannes König set it up on his own initiative in the south tower of the Isartor, which had been destroyed in the war and only barely rebuilt, with the help of artist friends and the financial support of Munich citizens.
Since the opening of the Liesl Karlstadt Cabinet in 2001, the Valentin Karlstadt Museum has borne the name of both protagonists. Karl Valentin's Ritterspelunke, a combination of cellar pub, stage and cabinet of curiosities, served as a model for the design. In the 60s and 70s, it became a place of pilgrimage for Karl Valentin.
In the course of the renovation of the Isartor in 1971-1972, exhibition rooms were created in the north tower. After Hannes König's death in 1989, his long-time colleague and partner Gudrun Köhl took over the management of the museum. From its foundation until 2018, it was a privately run museum.

Sabine Rinberger has been the director of the Valentin Karlstadt Museum since 2004. Until December 31, 2017, she ran it as a private business, and since 2018 as a museum of the City of Munich. With this decision, the Munich City Council has secured the future of the museum, regardless of who runs it."
