The Volkshochschule Reutlingen, a center for lifelong learning and cultural education, is rooted in the profound vision of the factory owner Emil Gminder, who founded the Verein für Volksbildung in 1918. This association built the first Volksbildungshaus in 1922, establishing itself as a permanent fixture in the region's educational landscape. Developments were abruptly halted by the National Socialists in 1938 and the association was dissolved. It was not until 1946 that the Volksbildungshaus was reopened and the association was re-established in 1948. In 1995, the adult education center was transformed into a limited liability company that is fully committed to the common good.
