Weststadthalle Essen

Today's "Weststadthalle" was built at the beginning of the 20th century (around 1902) to secure the Krupp cast steel factory as a repair workshop. The factory was surrounded by a large complex of buildings (today including Ikea & Colosseum Theater) - the so-called "Krupp City". After the end of the Second World War, AEG-Kanis Turbinenherstellung took over the entire Kruppstadt site.

The area was reorganized in 1994 through an urban planning competition and renamed "Weststadt". In 2003, for the first time in Germany, commercial music entertainment ("Stars in Concerts") and community music education (Folkwang Music School) were combined in one building complex - the "Weststadthalle". Unfortunately, not only did the Berlin show organizer fail after just two years,
but also the rock-pop concert agency WeststadtHalle GmbH in 2008.

In addition to many rivets and steel girders, a steam hammer and a Krupp Adelt overhead crane with a load capacity of 30,000 kg were left behind. These building relics still bear witness to the industrial-historical relevance of the Weststadthalle.
Even though the Weststadthalle was more of a functional building, its architectural style is extremely significant. The combination of steel framework and masonry describes the transition to a new construction method and was innovative and influential for the history of construction and building, such as the Zollverein colliery.

The glass building envelope not only provides heat and sound insulation, but also preserves the traces of industrial history with the original façade level.

In October 2011, the City of Essen's Youth Welfare Office finally took over the event hall. Since then, not only concerts and comedy events have taken place here, but also parties, live podcasts, poetry slams and much more for the core target group of 16-27.
