The Würzburg Residence, together with the Hofgarten and Residenzplatz, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981. This is linked to the obligation to "pursue an overarching strategy aimed at giving the cultural and natural heritage significance in public life and integrating its protection into comprehensive planning".
The justification for recognizing the residence states:
"Established between 1740 and 1770 and extended by magnificent gardens from 1765 to 1780, the Würzburg Residence is considered the most complete and exceptional Baroque palace. It represents one of the most splendid princely courts in Europe and is characterized by its originality, the ambitious building project and the international team of architects."
