The current Biennale for Visual and Sonic Media. düsseldorf photo+ will take place from May 17 to July 14, 2024 under the leitmotif ON REALITY. Exhibitions, presentations, concerts, talks, lectures, panels and other events in museums, collections, galleries, independent exhibition spaces and universities will be held throughout the city, all of which will be united by the fact that they deal in a wide variety of ways with questions and media that play a decisive role in our understanding of reality today.

We are not a photo festival, but want to try to show a critical reflection of digitally and analogically produced audiovisual realities by artists. In Düsseldorf, there have always been time-based media and their connection to social issues alongside other image forms. We would like to take up this idea and incorporate computer-generated image and sound worlds into the present.

This year's edition will focus on theoretical discourse. A two-day symposium at K21 will discuss an understanding of media that goes far beyond that of classical photography. Our biennial and the symposium consider photography as an everyday cultural technique and we are thus tying in with philosophical, sociological and ethical discourses. In addition, a multi-part series of lectures, the photo+ talks, will primarily discuss the question of how a biennial for visual and sonic media can be continuously developed for Düsseldorf. International curators will present their expertise for discussion. These events will take place in Salon 21 at K21.

The düsseldorf photo+ lab in Kapuzinergasse will host 6 weeks of exhibitions, performances and events on sound and artificial intelligence. It is also home to the festival office and a small library with literature from all the artists and groups participating in the biennial. A special edition of the podcast Fotografie Neu Denken will be produced exclusively for the Biennale under the title düsseldorf photo+ meets Fotografie Neu Denken. Andy Scholz will talk to artists, curators and theorists in three episodes together with Pola Sieverding and in three more together with Rupert Pfab.
