The sell-out of city centers, the displacement of subculture and neighborhood culture and the associated basic feeling of loss are a worldwide phenomenon. The image of many large cities today is increasingly characterized by soulless architecture, conformity and rising rents.

Since 2009, Alexander Steffen has been documenting the rapidly advancing process of change in urban space in his project Vanishing Berlin. He photographs places that we will remember with nostalgia, even though we had no idea that we would ever miss them. His motifs are primarily store fronts, derelict buildings and firewalls - fleeting sights, across all districts. Places that characterize Berlin and at the same time are rapidly disappearing from the cityscape.
