Anyone entering the Lutherturm from Volksgartenstraße enters a completely new spatial situation acoustically, visually and climatically. The street sounds appear muffled yet more pointed, the light focused yet more intimate, the walls cooling yet more secure. Although the space is rather small, and the passage that leads into the atrium of the Luther Church, then upward, over five cuboids stacked neatly on top of each other, up narrow stairs, to the belfry takes only a few seconds, it immediately opens up a panorama of possibilities. And anyone who thinks they're already at the top of the tower has only conquered half of it. The next step is only visual, acoustic and artistic. The building is a rough diamond of robust structural functionality. Art is supposed to unfold its credibility choreographically in it. It is important to the operators that there is no ecclesiastical or political interference. Boundaries are only of a physical-structural nature, never of a content-related nature. For over 25 years, artists have enjoyed the freedom to explore religious and spiritual themes, curated by Rochus Aust in collaboration with changing international guest curators.
