The word “monoculture” echoed in our minds.
In a way, soybean is one of the tips of the iceberg
of the colonialist structures in our region...
According to Astor Piazzolla, this musical instrument was originally developed in Germany for religious processions. By the end of the 19th century it was brought to Buenos Aires and it ended up being used in brothels and cabarets, giving birth to what we now know as Tango. Exactly two hundred years after Band's birth and one hundred years after Piazzolla's birth, we will try to reconnect with the origins of this instrument that started in Germany and made its way to Argentina. Therefore we would like to develop a performance about the musical, political and environmental journey of this instrument and open questions about its possible futures.
In 2017, Lerbrero and Bercetche made a horseback journey through Argentina. The result is a documentary film called “No va LLegar” (“He ain’t gonna make it”). This documentary is one of the previous steps that lead us into this new project, they both have an original approach on traditions.
In the year 2020, a 6 months mentoring process with the chinese musician Du Yun came to an end. She is a contemporary musician with a Ph.D. in music composition from Harvard University. Based on the bandoneon’s complex history, we created an experimental short movie that reconnects the instrument with its roots: from the religious processions to tango and folk music, while simultaneously posing questions about its possible futures. Based on Tomi Lebrero’s horseback journeys throughout Argentina, the short movie slowly turns into a “horse movie”, attempting to problematize the agro-export industry, the

risks of soy monoculture in Argentina and the impact on traditions. In this short movie we worked with the PHD in Environmental Science Laura Amdan. She will also collaborate with us in the performance.
For this audio visual performance we will select videos of our horseback journeys and play songs live that will explain the stories behind the footage, like storytellers do. We will mix storytelling with different musical collaborations as well as video clip language and interviews. Tomi Lebrero will play the bandoneon and Segundo Bercetche will play synthesizers and display the videos.
As we did for Forecast ́s short movie, we will sing the different stories that happened on the road and also explain the situations and problems of each region. We already did this on our first movie  ̈No va llegar ̈: for example, Tomi sang the song  ̈Sea of Soy ̈ trying to explain the problems of the industrialization of soy in the Argentinean Pampas. This song was inspired when we used to contemplate the enormous soy’s croplands. With a little bit of wind the plant’s superior leaves began to move from one side to another giving a water sensation. Lebrero and Bercetche also made a rap song inspired in their research: the song is called “Porque nos gusta tanto la soja?” (“Why do we like the soybean so much?”) and is an ironic view on Argentina’s economic addiction to this crop.
The word “monoculture” echoed in our minds. In a way, soybean is one of the tips of the iceberg of the colonialist structures in our region. The argentinean writer Osvaldo Bayer explains how this industry needs vast lands in few hands and how this would not have been possible without diminishing the native communities of the Pampas Region, especially from 1850 until 1882. Closer in time, the arrival of Monsanto’s (now owned by the german company Bayer) transgenic soybean and herbicides in the 1990’s expanded the agro/industry frontier to the north of the country, accelerating the deforestation process in that region. It’s clear for us that this industrialization process not only has consequences in the Climate Crisis. It also has an impact on traditions and it’s our intention to tell that story also.

NAQ – Nobody Answers Questions –
https://naq.genelabo.de/
After countless collaborations between Josip Pavlov and Gene Aichner over the last 12 years, „N A Q“ represents uncharted waters for both of them. With only the most basic equipment, they face the passage. Their mutual understanding, musically and artistically, invites the audience aboard.
Everyone embarks on a journey in the belly of a ship – that means it’s crampy but also snuggly – uncomfortable, intimate, close but unsighted – a journey into the unknown full of questions – who will be answering them?

Up into the night, up up. We leave home, leave land.
No morning dew will hold us! Away with us, into the dark sea! We rely on the boat, it is called Roditelj...
