The History and Ethics of Eugenics
What happens when humanity gains the power to shape future generations? Genetic screening, embryo selection, and gene editing are no longer science fiction. They're already reshaping what's possible, and reviving old questions about who gets to decide.
Carlo G. Quintanilla is a molecular biologist and Science Policy Analyst at the U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Since 2022, he's been turning the science and ethics of biotech into talks that reach beyond the lab, featured in Science, on NPR, and at the AAAS Annual Meeting.
In this talk:
→ Where eugenics came from, and how it became public policy
→ How IVF, screening, and gene editing changed what's possible
→ Whether today's reproductive tech already echoes old eugenic ideas
→ The open questions science and policy haven't answered yet
