Reasoning in The Dark: Medea and the Limits of Philosophy

The very definition of philosophy begins with an emotion: the love of wisdom. Yet, for centuries, thinkers have treated passions like wild animals that need to be tamed by reason. But what happens when intellect and raw emotions merge into something terrifying? 

We are diving deep into the dark heart of Greek tragedy to explore the ultimate tension inside the human soul. Together, we will hold Medea’s story up to the philosophical mirror: Is she a a desperate victim crushed by cruel turns of fortune, or a a cold, rational mastermind of choice? We will challenge the supremacy of cold rationality and attempt to find ways philosophy can serve as a “therapy of desire.” 

💬 No philosophy background required! Whether you are a lifelong philosophy lover or simply curious about great stories, this salon is open to all. Dr. Baskir will make the concepts accessible and engaging for everyone during this evening salon. 

Meet our Speaker: 
Dr. Ünsal Doğan Başkır is a scholar of political theory and historical political thought. He specializes in looking at conceptual tensions around justice, freedom, and the human condition through the timeless lens of philosophy and storytelling. 

Doors open at 7:15 PM. The salon starts at 7:30 PM sharp. End around 8:45 PM.
