ULTRAROUGE is a new Berlin-based cassette label dedicated to uncompromising music at the intersection of composition, free improvisation and sound art. Alongside emerging artists, the label will present carefully selected reissues and archival live recordings of rare and exceptional character.

For its inaugural edition, ULTRAROUGE brings together three artists whose work moves between drone, experimental electronics, ambient music and strange, folk-inflected song forms.

Each artist contributes one cassette, with all three releases appearing simultaneously as the label’s curated first edition.

Hye-Eun Kim moves between club culture and the contemporary art scene. She is an improviser, sculptor and occasional instrumentalist. Her music begins at the moment when a hiss or a dry loop becomes complex information: an accentuated pattern, an unstable rhythm or, when necessary, a breakbeat.

There Once Had Been a Great Rock combines minimal synthesizer and bass lines with raw acoustic guitar and intimate vocals. Slowly, a fragmented story unfolds through lyrics about memories, sentiments and strange situations.
