SOMMERAKADEMIE-Workshop: Billy Barry - Gaga/dancers - Movement, Emotions and Phrase Work

13–15 July 2026, 10 am–1 pm

This workshop combines the movement practice of the Gaga dancers movement practice with Billy Barry’s artistic research and repertoire. “Gaga Dancers” might sound a bit daunting at first, but don’t worry: the aim of the workshop is to meet dancers at their own individual level and help them develop their artistic expression further. Those who already have dance experience will feel right at home and will be guided and supported by Billy in a highly professional manner.

Gaga/dancers deepens dancers’ awareness of physical sensations, expands their palette of available movement options, enhances their ability to modulate their energy and engage their explosive power, and enriches their movement quality with a wide range of textures. The classes are built on the same principles as Gaga classes but also employ the specific vocabulary and skills that are part and parcel of a dancer’s knowledge. The layering of familiar skills with Gaga tasks presents dancers with fresh challenges, and throughout the class, teachers prompt the dancers to visit more unfamiliar places and ways of moving as well, unlocking the endlessness of possibilities. Dancers are guided to connect their effort to pleasure and to discover the virtue of silliness.

Furthermore you are going to explore Billy’s creative process regarding what motivates movement invention and what deepens it once discovered. Throwing fear and judgment out of the window as improvisers and recognizing habits, we can explore how physical tasks, fantasies and/or emotional states can expand our experience of movement invention.

Once discovered we will dive into moments from Billy’s repertory to explore these ideas inside of choreographed material and phrase work.

Billy Barry

was born in New York in 1989. He trained at The Ailey School from 2003 - 2007 and performed with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in 2006. Billy continued training and graduated from The Juilliard School in 2011. During his time at Juilliard, he performed with Gallim Dance and Keigwin + Co. He was part of the original cast of Gallim’s “Wonderland” at The Joyce Theatre in 2010. He joined the Batsheva Ensemble in 2011 and Batsheva Dance Company in 2012. In 2022, he was appointed Assistant Rehearsal Director of Batsheva Dance Company while still dancing until leaving the company in 2024. He was the recipient of the Yair Shapira Award for dance excellence in 2019. As a choreographer, Billy has created several short works, both contemporary and commercial. In 2022, Billy and Gianni Notarnicola began creating together, developing a movement language and style of their own. The two have since premiered two duets (B.O.A.T.S, based on a true story and G.O.A.T.S, going on a trip, sis) that have performed in Varda Hall, Suzanne Dellal Hall, Tmuna Theatre, Habait Theatre, Tanzfaktur Koln, Rotterdam, Chez Bushwick NY, Taipei and throughout Italy. In 2023, Billy choreographed solo works on himself and others (PETER- a story ballet, DansHer) as well as a trio (B THIGH STAR) that have performed at the CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo, Inbal Theatre and The Juilliard School. Since leaving Batsheva Dance Company, he has guested with Gallim Dance and Ate9. In 2025, he was the assistant choreographer to Imre and Marne VanOpstal for FKA Twigs’ Eusexua tour. 

LEVEL

This workshop is an INTENSIVE – designed for professional dancers and motivated participants with advanced dance experience.

You are not a professional dancer but have several years of experience in contemporary dance and would like to deepen your practice, yet feel unsure whether the level is right for you? Or perhaps you come from a different movement background and are interested in taking on this challenge? Here is a brief overview:

The Intensive assumes a foundational experience in contemporary dance. Depending on the workshop, techniques such as floorwork and improvisational practices may be part of the training. Most importantly, participants are expected to take responsibility for their own bodies and engage thoughtfully with new movement material and tasks. If something is unfamiliar, take your time, adapt where needed, or allow yourself to take a break.

Even if you do not come from a contemporary dance background, the Intensive can still be a rewarding experience – especially if you already have a strong movement practice, are open to new ways of working, and are interested in developing your own relationship to the material.

The TanzFaktur SommerAkademie - Cologne's international festival for contemporary dance - takes place every year in mid-July. The large-scale two-week festival is a platform for high-calibre national and international artists, projects and collectives.

In addition to the performances, workshops for professionals and dance enthusiasts offer opportunities for dialogue between dance professionals and the audience.

Dieser Workshop verbindet die Bewegungspraxis von Gaga Dancers mit Billy Barrys künstlerischer Forschung und seinem Repertoire.

Gaga Dancers vertieft das Bewusstsein der Tänzer*innen für körperliche Empfindungen, erweitert ihr Spektrum an Bewegungsmöglichkeiten, stärkt ihre Fähigkeit, Energie differenziert einzusetzen und ihre explosive Kraft zu aktivieren, und bereichert die Qualität ihrer Bewegungen durch eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Texturen. Die Klassen basieren auf denselben Prinzipien wie Gaga-Klassen, greifen jedoch zusätzlich auf das spezifische Vokabular und die Fähigkeiten zurück, die zum (professionellen) Wissen von Tänzer*innen gehören. Die Verbindung vertrauter Techniken mit Gaga-Aufgaben eröffnet neue Herausforderungen und lädt die Teilnehmenden dazu ein, ungewohnte Bewegungsweisen und neue körperliche Erfahrungsräume zu erkunden. So wird die Vielfalt und Unendlichkeit möglicher Bewegungen erfahrbar. Die Tänzer*innen werden dazu angeleitet, Anstrengung mit Freude zu verbinden und den Wert von Verspieltheit zu entdecken.

Darüber hinaus erhalten die Teilnehmenden Einblicke in Billy Barrys kreativen Arbeitsprozess. Gemeinsam wird erforscht, was die Entstehung von Bewegung motiviert und was sie vertieft, sobald sie entdeckt wurde. Indem wir als Improvisierende Angst und Bewertung loslassen und eigene Gewohnheiten erkennen, können wir untersuchen, wie körperliche Aufgaben, Fantasien und/oder emotionale Zustände unsere Erfahrung von Bewegungsentwicklung erweitern.

Anschließend tauchen wir in Ausschnitte aus Billys Repertoire ein, um diese Ideen innerhalb von choreografischem Material und Bewegungsphrasen weiter zu erforschen.

Dieser Workshop ist ein INTENSIVE – für professionelle Tänzer*innen und motivierte Teilnehmende mit fortgeschrittener Tanzerfahrung.

Du bist kein*e professionelle*r Tänzer*in, hast aber mehrere Jahre Erfahrung im zeitgenössischen Tanz und möchtest deine Praxis vertiefen und bist unsicher, ob das Level passt? Oder du kommst aus einem anderen Tanzbereich und möchtest dich dieser Herausforderung stellen? Hier ein kleiner Überblick:

Das Intensive setzt grundlegende Erfahrung mit zeitgenössischem Tanz voraus. Je nach Workshop können Techniken wie z. B. Floorwork oder improvisatorische Arbeitsweisen Teil des Trainings sein. Wichtig ist vor allem: Du übernimmst Verantwortung für deinen eigenen Körper und gehst bewusst mit neuen Bewegungen und Aufgabenstellungen um. Wenn etwas neu für dich ist, taste dich langsam heran oder gönn dir eine Pause. Auch wenn du nicht aus dem zeitgenössischen Tanz kommst, kann das Intensive eine spannende Erfahrung sein – besonders, wenn du bereits eine fundierte Bewegungspraxis mitbringst, offen für neue Arbeitsweisen bist und deinen eigenen Zugang zum Material entwickeln möchtest.

Jedes Jahr findet Mitte Juli die SommerAkademie der TanzFaktur statt – Kölns internationales Festival für zeitgenössischen Tanz. Das groß ausgerichtete zweiwöchige Festival ist eine Plattform für hochkarätige nationale und internationale Künstler*innen, Projekte und Kollektive.

Neben den Performances bieten Workshops für Profis und Tanzinteressierte Möglichkeiten zum Austausch zwischen Tanzschaffenden und Publikum.
