Goldbach ist ein Künstler, der immer wieder beeindruckende fotobasierte Werke produziert, die die Beziehung zwischen Zeit, Sprache und Bild untersuchen. Wir sind begeistert, seine neuesten Projekte im Rahmen dieses wichtigen Festivals zu präsentieren. 

Viele von Philipp Goldbachs Werken entstehen in Zusammenarbeit mit Institutionen. Sie schaf-fen Raum für einen intellektuellen Diskurs, in dem die Kunstwerke selbst zu offenen Kanälen dieses Gesprächs werden. Goldbach lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf Fragen rund um Autorschaft und Reproduktion (Themen, die durch die Kamera neu kontextualisiert werden), indem er sich fotografisch tief auf die Werke anderer Künstler einlässt. Für Goldbach ist Fotografie eine Kom-munikationsform, die ganz eigenen Regeln und Konventionen folgt. Ihre Bilder entstehen in einem kollektiver Akt. Bei Goldbach werden sie zu Objekten, die gleichermaßen auf die Vergangenheit, auf die Geschichte der Fotografie und ihren sich wandelnden Status in der Gegenwart schauen.

In seinem neuesten Projekt setzt sich Philipp Goldbach mit dem Werk des Künstlers Lucio Fonta-na auseinander. Die Öffnung der Malerei in den dreidimensionalen Raum, die Fontana mit seinem „Concetto spaziale“ („Raumkonzept“) in den 1940er Jahren vollzieht, indem er die Leinwände zerschneidet und durchsticht, wird von Philipp Goldbach mit fotografischen Mitteln aufgegrif-fen. Dafür verwendet er eine der ältesten Techniken analoger Fotografie, das Fotogramm: das kameralose Bild eines Objekts, bei dem dieses auf Fotopapier gelegt und belichtet wird. Lucio Fontanas radikale Ideen finden ihren Widerhall in Goldbachs Auseinandersetzung mit seinen Ori-ginalen, indem er sie in direkten physischen Kontakt mit dem analogen Fotomaterial bringt. Die Ausschnitte des negativen Raums werden als spektrale Positive realisiert, eine schwarze figu-rative Präsenz, die Fontanas radikale Eingriffe spiegelt. Diese Werke sind mit Zustimmung der Fondazione Lucio Fontana und in Zusammenarbeit mit internationalen Museen wie dem Centre Pompidou, Paris, dem Museum Folkwang, Essen und der Pinakothek der Moderne, München, produziert worden.

As an artist that consistently realizes stunning photo-based work which explores the relationship between time, language and image, we are thrilled to present his newest research in the context of this important festival.

Many of Philipp Goldbach‘s works are in collaboration with institutions, creating space for an intellectual dialog to take place, in which artworks become open channels for this conversation. Goldbach draws attention to questions around authorship and reproduction (themes that are re-contextualized by the camera), by engaging closely with the works of other artists. For Gold-bach, photography is understood as a line of communication that lends itself to its own rules and conventions. The shaping of photography is a collective act, where, its images become objects of its own reflections on the past, on photographic history, and its everchanging status as an art form, recent and modern.

In his latest project, Philipp Goldbach engages in a dialogue with the work of artist Lucio Fon-tana. The opening of painting into three dimensional real space, introduced by Fontana in his 1940s „Concetto spaziale“ („spatial concept“) where he sliced and pierced through his canva-ses, is taken up by Philipp Goldbach with photographic means. To do so, the artist uses one of the oldest techniques of analog photography, the photogram: a camera-less image realized by an object being placed on photographic paper and exposed to light. Lucio Fontana‘s radical ex-pansion of painting is echoed in Goldbach‘s examination of his originals by putting them in direct physical contact with the analog photographic material. The slices of negative space are realized as spectral positives, a black figurative presence that echoes Fontana’s radical incisions. These works have been developed with the consent of the Fondazione Lucio Fontana and in collabo-ration with international museums such as the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Museum Folkwang, Essen and the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich.
